I want to cover the inside of the chair with 4cm thick upholstery foam in 4 sections, one side should be glued to the shell of the chair and the other face should be 4cm out. I want to keep the silhouette of the shell. from the side view.

I had a shot using forms but I can't control the 4cm depth. From the side view, I suspect there is a technique with thickening and offsets but I can't figure it out.

I've also attached a reference of a car seat, That boggled my mind and I can't understand how to model

I also thought that maybe I could scale one down and then fill the edges, then do a profile cut from the side

And thickening gives me some weird results

You could try this new tool called "Ruled":

Thanks, Ben, a great tool I never knew what it did! Ruled gave mee a nice edge band but didn't recreate the curvature of the top surface

Not sure what you mean about the "curvature top surface". In the image it looks good.

Could you maybe make a screencast?
